Christian Values

The school’s Christian values are having a good impact on children’s academic achievement - SIAMS

About Us

You will find us in a picturesque rural village of Oldbury-on-Severn, nestled just above the Severn estuary, three miles from the popular market town of Thornbury in South Gloucestershire. Over recent years the school has catered for both the children who live in the village but increasingly to children from Thornbury and the surrounding areas. Our pupils have the advantage of learning at the centre of a rural farming community, also being lucky enough to have our beautiful village church situated only a short walk away from the school.

We pride ourselves on being a small school that develops children with big ambitions. We are a welcoming, all-inclusive school where every child matters, and we focus on the specific needs of each and every one of our pupils. Our enriching, OUR (Oldbury’s Unique Response) curriculum is designed to start local and go global. A major focus of OUR Curriculum is to empower our pupils to become effective learners and using our underpinning values to help develop their character. Parents often tell us that what makes us special is that we know our children so well; meaning children feel safe, nurtured and part of something special.

In the Beginning

Originally, there was only one large classroom, with “a Gallery”, in which over 100 children were taught by two teachers until school-leaving age. Fund-raising took place in the village in the 1890’s to pay for a separate classroom and cloakroom for “the Infants”. Soon after the school assumed Voluntary Controlled (V.C.) status, education in Gloucestershire was re-organised.

Hard-surface paths and playground were laid. Electricity was supplied and mains water. (Previously, drinking water had to be collected from the Rectory daily in buckets!). Central heating replaced the wood fired and coal stoves which has caused “smoke and smuts” and “made the children cough” for 100 years!

The Oldbury “Family”

A caring family feeling runs throughout the school, staff and pupils alike. The school has played a central role in the village since its foundation in 1854 and continues to do so today. How many schools can say that up to four generations of the same family attended or even returned to the school as staff or governors?

This sense of belonging supports the confidence of our pupils, helping them to develop independence as they grow.

Christian Distinctiveness

Within our happy and secure atmosphere, children are valued for themselves and will experience a wide range of balanced learning opportunities that will help them grow into independent and caring people.

We provide an education of the highest quality within the context of Christian beliefs and practice, serving our community to the best of our ability. We encourage an understanding of the meaning and significance of faith, and promote Christian values through the experiences we offer to all our pupils.

Our strong Christian ethos is promoted and reflected in our Values Education, RE and PSHE and RSHE programmes. Children enjoy ‘learning about’ and ‘learning from’ our values. Pupils even seek these behaviours in others for their weekly KS1 and KS2 Pupil Awards.

“The excellent relationships between children and throughout the whole school community, based on the distinctive Christian values of respect and friendship, have a substantial impact on children’s personal development and well-being.” SIAMS Report 2017
