Term 1

School News Term 1

4 September 2017

Dear Parents & Carers,

Hello and welcome back to another exciting year at Oldbury School.  I hope you have all had a great summer and the children are well-rested and ready to learn!

The topics for this term are:

Class 1 – Homes and Toys

Class 2 – Fairy Tales

Class 3 – Anglo-Saxons and Vikings

The clubs available this term are:

Netball – Thursday lunchtimes for everyone
Football - Thursday for class 2 & 3 after school (3.15-4.15pm)
·         No Hockey/Rugby club this term but it will start again as soon as a sports coach is available

May I remind you that PE will take place on Monday and Thursday afternoons for all 3 classes and swimming lessons at Thornbury Leisure Centre will take place on Monday afternoons during terms 2 and 3 (30 Oct – 9 Feb).

As you know, we have already had an INSET day this academic year (1st September).  The remaining INSET days, when the school is closed for children, for this academic year are: Monday 18 December and Tuesday 2 January 2018.  This leaves us with 2 further INSET days which are still to be decided, which we will inform you about as soon as possible.

I have a few of the usual reminders at the start of the academic year.  School lunches are now £2.10 for pupil meals (Year 3-6).  Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 school meals are free.  Dinner money should be paid weekly, either cash or cheque.  Please make cheques payable to South Gloucestershire Council.

Could I also remind you that if your child is ill or will be late to school that you inform us as soon as possible by ringing the school office on 01454 414297.

Please can all children have a pair of wellies in school so that they can access the playfield during playtimes and lunchtime.

The school gates open between 8.45-9am each morning, please could you ensure that your child reaches school during this 15 minute time period.

Weekly guitar lessons are available for KS2 children at a cost of £30.00 per term.

Don’t forget to check the school website www.oldburyschool.org.uk (particularly the diary and news section) for all the latest photos/information.

School inform – please order online with School Trends. www.schooltrends.co.uk.  Could I remind you that children should be wearing proper ‘school’ shoes to school and not black trainers; likewise children should be wearing school trousers and now black, skinny jeans.

Governors’ News

Welcome back to this new academic year.  We would like to remind you that all Governors’ meetings are ‘open’ meetings which you are welcome to attend.  Please contact the school office for more details if you want to attend any of our meetings.  The dates for meetings for the coming academic year are: Mon 18 Sept; Mon 20 Nov; Mon 5 Feb; Mon 19 March; Mon 14 Mya and Mon 9 July.  We would also like to congratulate Lois Pearce and Jack Chester who won the Governors’ award for sustained effort throughout the year.  A big ‘well done’ goes to both these pupils.

We have some ‘welcomes’ to say to people joining our school this September.  We have Hugo Charnley-Ward joining us in Year 4 from St Ursula’s School in Bristol and we also have 2 new members of staff: Holly Roue will be assisting Mrs Lewin on our Otters After School Club and Rachael Sayce will be our interventions teacher working every Thursday.  We welcome them all and hope that their time at Oldbury School will be very happy.

Otters after school club

Sessions run on Mon; Tues; Wed & Thursday for Oldbury School children (term time only) from 3.15pm - 5.15pm.

The costs per session: first child £9.25 & second/third child £6.25.

At Otters we have lots of fun constructing, colouring, cooking, painting, and junk modelling.  We also play games, watch dvd’s/ movies and when the weather is nice we play outside.  In between all that we get snacks and drinks.  Please call or email the school to book your child/children’s sessions.

Finally, I have some important news regarding our members of staff.  Mrs Ovens is expecting a baby in March 2018 and will be leaving us on maternity leave in February 2018.  Because we want to ensure continuity for our Year 6 children in their important SATs year, Miss Jillett will be teaching Class 3 for this academic year and Mrs Ovens and myself will be sharing the teaching in Class 2.  I am sure that you will all join me in sending warm congratulations to Mrs Ovens and her husband.

Yours sincerely,

Debbie Dix
