Religious Education
Intent
At Oldbury on Severn Primary School, we endeavour to create a community everyone can love, learn and flourish. We aim to create learners who are equipped for the future with essential knowledge and skills such as independence, resilience, motivation, and respect. Rooted in our Christian ethos and inspired by the words “Love one another” (John 13:34), we believe that through love, every child can learn, flourish, and experience true joy in their learning journey.
Religious Education (RE) plays a vital role in nurturing the values of growth, joy, community, care, friendship, and respect. It encourages children to develop independence, motivation, and a deep respect for others. Through RE, we inspire a love of learning about different religions and worldviews, fostering compassion, understanding, and a sense of belonging to a wider community.
RE is implemented following the South Gloucestershire Agreed Syllabus and Understanding Christianity. The principal aim of RE is to engage children in systematic enquiry into significant human questions addressed by religions and worldviews, enabling them to learn, reflect, and flourish as thoughtful and open-minded individuals.
Children develop the skills and understanding needed to explore these questions and to form their own respectful and informed responses, supporting their growth as compassionate, caring members of society.
Implementation
Children are taught RE in an open, safe, and loving environment where they feel supported and valued. They are encouraged to “Love one another”, to show care and friendship, and to engage confidently with big questions. In this nurturing space, children can learn deeply, express themselves freely, and experience the joy of discovery.
Through exploring a range of religions, faiths, and beliefs, children learn to describe, explain, and analyse diverse practices and traditions. They are taught to appreciate diversity within our local community and the wider world, celebrating what makes each person unique.
Weekly RE lessons and special RE days offer opportunities for children to flourish spiritually, morally, socially, and culturally. Learners are encouraged to enquire and investigate, learning what enables individuals and communities to live together in friendship, care, and respect. They develop the ability to articulate their own beliefs and values confidently, guided always by love and a commitment to “Love one another”.
Learning is not limited to written work; children use discussion, drama, and art to explore and express their ideas creatively, allowing every child to flourish in their own unique way.
